Looking things up
How a lookup thinks
A lookup finds an item in one column, then reads a value from the same row in another column. It works like finding a name in a phone book.
XLOOKUP
Give it what to find, where to search, and where the answer is. A fourth item sets what to show if nothing matches.
=XLOOKUP(E2,A2:A5,B2:B5,"Not found")If your Excel is older
XLOOKUP needs Excel 2021 or Microsoft 365. VLOOKUP works everywhere, but it can only look to the right. Always end it with FALSE for an exact match.
=VLOOKUP(E2,A2:B5,2,FALSE)
