Clean up text
Pull out the first word or first name
=TEXTBEFORE(A2," ")How it works in Excel
- A2 is the full text.
- " " says to stop at the first space.
- Everything before that space is returned.
- For the part after the space, use =TEXTAFTER(A2," ").
- These need Microsoft 365. On older versions, use =LEFT(A2,FIND(" ",A2)-1).
- You can use any character in place of the space, such as a comma.
The idea in general
You pick a marker in the text and keep everything up to it.

- The full text is in A2 and a space separates the parts.
